- Construction Date: 2022
- Location: Bridgetown
- Contracting Investor: Barbados Government
- Category: Renovation
- Type: Public
Berkan Construction Services embarked on a comprehensive multi-phase project to revitalize the Coleridge Street court complex. The project encompassed a thoughtful blend of restoration and modernization, ensuring the preservation of the buildings’ historical character while incorporating modern amenities and technology to create a functional and efficient legal space.
Challenges & Solutions
- Respecting History: The project demanded a meticulous approach to preserving the architectural heritage. The team documented existing structures and employed techniques minimising alterations to the original fabric of the buildings. For instance, a new elevator in the Old Town Hall was placed in a 1957 addition to avoid impacting the original 1730s structure.
- Modernization for Efficiency: While preserving the historic character, we ensured the complex met the needs of a modern legal system. Upgrades included the installation of fire exits, an elevator, security systems, and AV technology. The refurbishment of courtrooms, offices, and other spaces created a functional and comfortable environment for all.
- Adaptive Reuse: The project also involved the repurposing of specific buildings within the complex. For example, the Old Town Hall, meticulously restored to its former glory, now serves as a dedicated space for Barbados’ arbitration center.
Outcomes & Impact
The revitalization of the Coleridge Street court complex is a testament to Berkan Construction Services’ ability to deliver exceptional results. This project not only preserved a significant piece of Barbadian history but also created a modern and efficient legal hub that will serve the island for generations to come.
